The three-row electric SUV is the segment every Indian manufacturer wants and almost none have solved, because a usable third row and a big battery fight each other for the same space. Here is where the contenders actually stand.

India buys seven-seaters for reasons that have nothing to do with seven people. Extended families, school runs, weddings, the assumption that the car must occasionally do a 700 km drive with luggage — these push buyers up a size class regardless of daily need. Electrifying that segment is genuinely hard, because a flat floor battery pushes the seat base up, and a raised third-row seat base is exactly what makes a third row unusable for adults.

That tension explains why most of what follows is either very large, very expensive, or a plug-in hybrid wearing an electric halo. We have ranked by how close each is to being something you can actually buy, not by spec-sheet ambition.

1. Mahindra XEV 9S

The most concrete of the lot. Built on Mahindra's dedicated electric platform and closely related to the XEV 9e, the 9S is the company's answer to the three-row question, and it benefits from being designed as an EV from the start rather than converted from a combustion model.

The important things: a genuinely low floor for the class, pack options that put a realistic 450–500 km within reach on the larger battery, and a service network that already covers the country. The third row is a proper third row for adults on shorter journeys rather than a legal formality, though luggage space with all seven seats up remains modest, as it does in every SUV of this footprint.

The catch is price positioning. Once you specify the battery and the equipment that makes it feel like the flagship it is, you are shopping well above the sub-₹25 lakh comfort zone, and you are doing so against established diesel seven-seaters that cost substantially less to buy.

2. Kia Carens Clavis EV (extended-range variants)

The Carens Clavis EV is the pragmatic entry — an electric version of a body Indian families already understand, at a price that does not require rethinking the household budget. It is an MPV shape rather than a true SUV, and for third-row usability that is an advantage: the roofline stays high all the way back, so headroom in row three is better than in most of its rivals.

Expect the larger-battery variants to be the ones worth waiting for. The smaller pack makes sense for a purely urban car, but a seven-seater is bought precisely for the trips where a small battery becomes a planning exercise.

Kia's advantage here is that it is not asking buyers to take a leap. The car looks familiar, sits in a familiar price band, and comes from a brand with a settled dealer footprint. That is worth more in this segment than any headline figure.

3. The JSW MG three-row NEV

JSW MG's three-row entry is the most interesting unknown, because the platform underneath it is designed to take multiple powertrains. That gives the company an option nobody else in this list has: launch the same body as a battery EV for buyers with charging, and as a plug-in hybrid or range-extender for buyers without.

For a seven-seater, that flexibility is arguably more valuable than in any other segment. The buyer who needs three rows is disproportionately likely to be the buyer who does long, unplanned, luggage-laden drives — the exact use case where pure electric asks the most of Indian charging infrastructure.

What is not yet clear is where it lands on price, how the third row packages around the pack, and how quickly JSW MG can build out service coverage in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities. Those three answers will decide whether this is a serious contender or a showroom halo.

4. Tata's next three-row electric SUV

Tata has the largest installed EV base in the country and the most accumulated field data on how Indian owners actually charge, which shows in how conservatively it specifies packs and thermal management. Its three-row programme is the natural extension of the Harrier and Safari EV work.

The pitch is unglamorous and effective: a known brand, the widest EV service coverage in India, an owned charging network, and pricing discipline. If your priority is the lowest-anxiety ownership experience rather than the highest specification, this is the one to watch.

The reservation is packaging. Converting a body originally engineered around a combustion powertrain into a three-row EV tends to cost floor height, and floor height is exactly what the third row cannot spare.

5. Hyundai's three-row electric SUV

Hyundai has been deliberate about India-specific electric product, and its three-row entry is expected to be a localised model rather than a lightly adapted import. Localisation is the whole story here — imported EVs in this class carry duty structures that put them out of the segment entirely.

Hyundai's strengths are cabin quality, ride refinement and a genuinely good record on software, which is not a small thing when the car's climate control, charging schedule and drive modes all live behind a screen. Expect it to be the most polished car in this list to sit in.

It is also the furthest out, and the least specified publicly. Treat it as something to be aware of when you plan, not something to wait for.

How to compare them when they finally arrive

Third-row seat height off the floor is the number that decides usability, and it is never in a brochure. Sit in row three yourself, knees up or not. If your thighs are unsupported, the seat is a children's bench regardless of what the seat count says.

Boot volume with all seven seats up is the second. In this class it ranges from roughly 150 litres — two soft bags — to over 300. A seven-seater that cannot carry seven people's luggage is a five-seater with a party trick.

Then charging behaviour. A three-row EV is heavy, so highway consumption climbs fast; a 500 km rated range can mean 320 km at 100 km/h with seven aboard and the air conditioning working. Ask for the DC charging curve, not the peak number, and ask whether the pack preconditions before a fast charge.

The honest recommendation

If you need a three-row car in the next six months, the electric options are still thin enough that a strong hybrid or a good diesel remains defensible. If you can wait twelve to eighteen months, the segment will look meaningfully different, and the cars arriving then will have been engineered with a year more of Indian charging reality behind them.

And if your third row genuinely gets used twice a year, be honest about whether you are buying a seven-seater or renting one twice a year — the difference funds a lot of taxi rides.
